Reservoir Characterization

The objective is to enhance characterization of complex oil & gas reservoirs through:

  • a workflow based on outcrop full characterization, as analogues of complex reservoirs, from pictures acquisition to 3D reservoir modeling (SmartAnalog™);
  • an integrated solution for both conventional and unconventional fractured reservoir modeling and (FracaFlow™, TightFlow™);
  • a multipurpose toolbox for well log analysis & processing (EasyTrace™).

 

  3D outcrop modeling
IFPEN proposes a range of services for 3D outcrop modeling based on an innovative workflow for acquisition and advanced outcrop interpretation.
The SmartAnalog™ workflow relies on photogrammetry techniques and on a dedicated software for digital outcrop 3D visualization.
The method is systematically used to complete an in-house database of analogues of complex reservoirs systems such as turbidites, microbialites, etc., including fracturation and diagenesis aspects.

•  FracaFlow™ provides an integrated workflow for fractured reservoir characterization, modeling and calibration. It includes dedicated modules ranging from geological data analysis and integration, to fracture modeling with a DFN (Discrete Fracture Network) and dual porosity medium upscaling for reservoir simulation.

  TightFlow™ addresses tight reservoir characterization, taking into account geomechanical effects induced by hydraulic stimulation. Based on FracaFlow™, the integrated approach is used to calibrate the stimulated fracture network around the wells and to predict the hydrocarbon production. TightFlow™ offers innovative unstructured meshing methods in order to keep the accuracy in these complex fractured media while keeping reasonable computing time.

 

Ongoing Research & Innovation items:

  • improvement of mechanical model: variable stress field;
  • generation of unstructured meshes for both fracture and matrix description for accurate simulation of production in low permeability reservoirs (link with PumaFlow™).

  EasyTrace™ is a multi-disciplinary 1D data processing and editing tool, featuring under a very productive package a wide range of functionalities for geologists, geophysicists and reservoir engineers.

  • improvement of carbonate rocks description by integration of effective-medium modeling: making the link between carbonate microstructure and well sonic logs.

JIPs : Become a sponsor!

IFPEN organizes and coordinates JIPs (Joint Industry Projects), collaborative research projects bringing together several industrial partners who jointly fund a program designed to solve a given problem. This formula means that the financial risks can be shared upstream and the research results downstream. This sharing makes it possible to explore avenues that lead to genuine innovations and provides the partners with a real competitive edge by giving them early access to new technologies. IFPEN is coordinating JIPs in partnership with more than 30 national and international operating companies.

- CATS 2: Cellular Automata for Turbidite Systems – Second Phase
The objectives are to characterize the 3D sedimentary architecture of turbidite reservoirs using a process-based modeling approach and to predict the distribution of reservoir heterogeneities. Deliverables are embedded in a prototype software producing realistic numerical simulation of turbidite systems and dynamic reservoir models. Workshops with all CATS partners are organized every 6 months. These workshops are very interactive: all partners discuss the results obtained and share their experience. The cost is 65 K€/year/partner and partners are required to join for the 3 years.

- AQUARIUS: Architecture and quantification of a reservoir in a lacustrine system
Following the JIP COMPAS (Cretaceous Outcrop analog from argentina for Microbial Pre-salt Atlantic Series), Aquarius JIP aims at fully characterizing Sparry stromatolite-rich reservoirs of the Green River Formation (USA). Innovative workflows will be used for both outcrops acquisition and modeling (using our SmartAnalog™ photogrammetry technology), and reservoir modeling tailored to lacustrine carbonate reservoirs, calibrated on the Green River Fm.
Program is currently under finalization process with potential partners.

- DREAM: Diagenesis and reef analogue modeling
The stratigraphic and diagenetic complexities inherent in carbonate reservoirs require accurate descriptions and models to optimize production recovery. Facies, diagenesis, and distribution of the related reservoir properties are keys to characterize reservoirs. This is especially true for Tertiary reefal carbonates that show localized build-up morphologies with very variable slopes (10 to up to 60°), and isolated shallow water facies surrounded by deep water facies (several 100s of m). This raises many questions about the exploration and the reservoir potential of such platforms. The objective of DREAM is to apply a reservoir characterization workflow to the Iscles-Berganuy analogue in Spain, in order to improve our understanding and yield valuable constraints to model such reservoirs. The workflow ranges from outcrops acquisition and modeling (using our SmartAnalog™ photogrammetry technology) sedimentology, stratigraphy, early diagenesis to reservoir architecture and geostatistical modeling.
